hello wpowokal,
i read your posting about polarity reversal. i am assuming that you have compound motor connected for self excitation. by moving your brush holder assembly you may have taken it out of the neutral plane a little to much and allowed polarity from either main pole or interpole to have most influence on polarity. by returning brush holder assembly to neutral plane and re-connecting to load, i am sure the problem will self correct.
