Depending where a person is at and how bad the winters, just insulate the barrels and use a solar water heater sitting in the sun. As long as the water stays above freezing I dought there would be a problem. If you have bad winters and need alot of heat, just make lots of gas, making the gas should warm the barrels, and you'll probably be using alot then anyway right :). nothing to lose
