Here's a photo I've always liked that illustrates the tip vortex. The size of the vortex is exagerated because the plane is flying at a very low altitude, well within "ground effect". Also see the link below for more good info http://142.26.194.131/aerodynamics1/drag/Page6.html Mike.

That picture is from Popular Science magazine!!! I have the issue and they were analyzing the posibility of wing tip turbines able to use the energy these vortex create. The turbines were either going to drive hydraulic pumps or electric gennys :) Warrior Warrior__ "Why can't Murphy's Law be used to my advantage??" [ Parent ]

O.K. So where's the similar picture showing the effect of adding winglets.  Why do they always do half the job? GeoM [ Parent ]
