with a smaller shaft it would be even harder to spin up to 12v with a load on it.. thats a flat belt on there.. i made a slightly bigger shaft for it[pipe]..plus i replaced the 30w headlite that hooked to the field coil with a taillight bulb..now its a lot easyer to pedal when theres a load on it..and i still dont need a batt to power it up.. the more currant you apply to the field coil --the stronger the magnetic field.. not sure of the amp rating on this alt-65??--but theres no way im going to get that pedaling--so you want the amount of currant going to the field coil to be somthing you can handle--thats why i switched to even a smaller bulb--no sence in fighting all that extra drag--just for fun i hooked up a 400w 38v aircraft landing light--got way to bright to even look at--plus i had to pedal like a mad dog in heat... not sure of what i can get out of it now--blew out most of my spare headlites.. guess ile have to borrow the amp meter off of my motorhome pedgen and find out.. its late here...heres a shot of the alt and wire hook up..
