If you do not have a vintage "growler"- get one.

They will work with an open core of wire.  

If reclaiming wire from Microwave ovens or somewhere else, there is always the chance of an insulation failure, so you can test them before you cast them.  Which is a good thing to do even if you wind virgin copper.

Just an idea.
