There are wringer washers laying all over the woods here... that is not what I had in mind.  Im sure the Mrs would not favor the wringer washer either.  Ideally, I would have two side by side washers that run off the same power source at once.  I am talking about washing for SIX people, three of whom are under 4 (hence collect dirt).  Small loads of laundry are not what we do.
I am almost sure the washer I had in mind externally looked like a "normal" washing machine.  Seems like the rear panel was removed, and they had a gas engine back there/ off to the side.
Used washers that have a burned up motor: free.  Used washers that still run: cheap enough.  So running the gennie is not out of the question, but there isn't alot of room for advancement in running it RE.  I get the point about electric motors being a "good" way to run the washer, tho.

The problems you'd encounter in attempting to convert an a/c modern washer to run off a d/c motor or other source such as a water wheel are numerous. First off, all the control mechanisms are a/c such as the water valves, timers etc. So i just don't see how you would practically convert it all over.

Your best bet is to buy the most efficient electric washer and run it off a good sine wave inverter or sine wave generator. Some of the front load models available today are stingy with both water and electric usage. I would think it would be better and probably cheaper in the long run overall to generate electricity with whatever power source you can come up with and then use that to run a washing machine.

Of course dryers are a totally different story! They are energy hogs and a good old fashioned clothesline is yet to be beat in energy consumption.
