The heat of the rectifiers isn't much of an indication of the heat in the stator.
DanB, Hugh, or Flux would likely be the final authority on the subject, but it appears like you need the machine to furl earlier, which can sometimes be accomplished by decreasing the weight of the tail.

For that winding ( unless it is different from the 8ft one) I don't think you can expect it to sustain more than 600W. With larger blades in a high wind area you will probably get fairly continuous power in the peak region rather than the occasional gust. Try to get it furling earlier.
