I don't think I'd bite at conduit, but might consider using some fairly thick walled DOM tube instead of a solid axle.......

go for the 1" dia. solid axle.
 don't know how tall a platform you intend to put your mill on.
or were the mechanical power transmission requirement idea came from
conduit may be best used underground to protect the wires coming from the alternator .

sandia labs is a good read.
they did a nice bit on two and three bucket drag units
i did not check into their  daraius experiments.
it seemed mostly directed at some very large devises

 got no problem tipping my hat to ed lenze.
 he has obviously succeeded were so many of us have faltered.
a vawt is a different creature that a prop driven alternator .
and for some reason it attracts people like myself with no previous
knowledge of electrical generation.
you need to get insight into what is actually going on inside the
alternator before you can do any sort of proper matching.
