Go back to the hardware store, but this time go to the plumbing
isle. Brass toilet bolts are what you're looking for.

Or, the marine supply where Silicone or Tolbin Bronze bolts and nuts can be obtained. Those two 'Bronzes' should be 97% Copper.

Whatever you decide to use to bring the wires out, it's worth waiting to get the right stuff.   To paraphrase a saying we have in the uk.... to spoil a ship for a ha'peth (half penny worth) of tar.

I once saw someone say on here, "I haven't had a wind turbine for the last 35 years, one more day or two isn't going to make a lot of differnce", and I've remebered it every time I thought about cutting a corner forthe sake of speed.
