Thanks Flux
I realise the variables are many
I have good offset and the blades square up to the wind well
how long should the tail be including the vane, I have seen all shapes and sizes  on this site
within what  margin can the furling tail really control output and is it necessary to have this degree of control
also what material do you use for the vane

I like the tail to be half rotor diameter to the start of the vane but nothing is set in stone.

Furling is not a precise process and the peaks of the current will often shoot well over the intended value, as long as it is not sustained it doesn't matter. Most machines drop power in high winds beyond the start of furling, this way is safer even if it gives reduced output.

I have never used anything other than aluminium for vanes, wood is heavy and rots and falls to bits here. Aluminium is claimed to fail with fatigue vibration and an unsupported sheet will not last long but I fold the top and bottom edges at 90 to stiffen it and fit a couple of damping strips to prevent vibration excitation. I have had no failures.
