If you go to otherpower.com and search the wind generator projects you will see the rig they constructed for handling magnets of this size.  They will take fingers off.  They had one half of the rotor on the bottom with the magnets mounted.  Through this rotor they had evenly spaced holes through which threaded rods emerged several feet long.  Ratcheting screws were threaded onto the rods.  The other magnetic rotor was inserted on top and the screws were slowly turned to allow the two halves of the rotors to come together at the correct height.  Go to the site to read the specifics and see the pictures.

There is no other way to safely handle the pull force.  A 2" x 2" x 1" block one inch away from a piece of iron exerts 17lbs of pull.  At 1/2" the pull is over 60lbs.  Double this if you are aligned with the opposite side of another magnets.  Now multiply this by the number of magnets and you will see that you can have close to 1000lbs of pull.

This calculator might help http://www.kjmagnetics.com/block_calculator.php
