Be aware these batteries weight 28KG as well. If your back is dodgy, don't try lifting it!

This is why you can never measure state of charge when charging floating or discharging. You can only measure this when the surface charge is removed. Standing for a minimum of 6 hrs or after a minute or so of discharge with a modest load. Even 12.9 is on the high side but some calcium based VRLA's can just make it. Typical full charge for most flooded cells is about 12.8V.

Based on Flux's explanation, that's a normal behavior. We were doing better than we think. I'm glad it's not proved the other way around.
