The first thing you should do is get a bigger generator and put in the circuitry needed to cut you off the grid when the grid fails. The generator then runs automatically until the grid comes back on. As a farmer you may have an option there too, if you can produce your own methane (natural gas). In that case you might want a natural gas powered generator. I guess the bottom line is, "What is the nature of your operation and how much power do you use?" You can also convert some tractors and trucks to run on natural gas if you have a surplus. You need to look at all your options.
