I managed to get hold of some thick copper sheet (about 14awg) which when cut into strips provides a higher cross sectional area than pipe. For insulation, I used heat-shrink sleeving, 2 layers (and make sure the copper has no sharp edges otherwise the sleeving will tear).

Works well and I would think that a 1" wide strip will be good for up to 100 amps.
