as for how long they last, we have some at work that are 20 odd years old still going, we've had some last a few minutes( warranty  replaced), for cost savings if you have varidrives they will make a difference, if the motor just runs at 50/60hz straight it's a waste.

For a turbine, if you can hack the programing, could be interesting, tell the motor it wants to run at Xrpm and push it a bit faster and back invert, I think someone is doing that(prairie wind or something)
