I also used a bearing on the top of my generator. It's been up for about a year. It is much more responsive in light winds. My bearing is a used regular ball bearing I had on hand. I figured if mine fails, the genny will slide down the spud until it reaches the tower and stop there. Be sure the blades can't get into the guy wires if it does fail! OUCH!!!

However,I DO have to agree with Roy about the tapered bearing vs ball bearing. That's the best.
