I agree, this is a throw away society. Appliances, cars, etc are not made well enough to last for long. I'm known to take just about anything electrical, metal or wood if I can see a possible use for it.
My philosophy is keep debt down low or none, try to buy good quality stuff (that I really need), and make use of the junk I gather. I DO have lots of junk! When I'm working on a project, I take a trip to my junk piles and shop there first. So far, my generator towers have cost me nothing for except paint, guy lines and welding rods.
Our whole economy is based on the price of foreign oil. We may not be able to eliminate this, but we can reduce it to the point where the price will drop so it's affordable.
