I haven't built anything yet, but I'm doing my homework here.
Air-heat dump-load coils can be found in discarded electric ovens and electric clothes dryers. When someone converts to using gas for water heat because its cheaper, the old electric water heater can be installed as a dump-load water pre-heater (unless you have lots of sun, then a sliding glass door from a demo-house is great for a solar water pre-heater box).
I hear old computers have good heat-sinks, and microwave ovens have big ceramic magnets (good for a starter PMA project to learn?).
I see large-diameter waste PVC sections all the time in growing housing dvelopements. They could make a good starter prop, though I would quickly work towards replacing it with a proper wood prop (scavenged wood, of course!)
Lawn mowers are thrown away all the time. Only a few years old, and just need a new air filter and clean spark plug. They are easy to adapt a belt and car alternator to, for a 12-volt charger...
