Fieldlines discussion board migration
« on: April 07, 2010, 06:09:36 AM »
Firstly, thank you to all who have contributed hugely to this forum through providing good content, help to others, feedback about how to improve things.. and all the donations which which have made this migration possible.

A few here may still remember the last time we did this about 8 or 9 years ago I think, when we  moved from the old webbs board to scoop.  That was a big improvement then, although there was a learning curve.  Lots of folks were confused by the new board, some were down right mad about it... seems like change upsets everybody a little bit sometimes!  I've grown kind of used to scoop and sort of like it - but - it's slow, clunky and there's almost nobody left in the world who is willing to help us with it when problems come up.

So we're moving to a more modern Simple Machines Forum.  We've had this software on our server now for a while and have hired help to migrate about 37,000 user Id's and their passwords, and all the content (about 130,000 posts) from this board into it.  We (myself and a few other folks here) have been mucking around in the new forum now for a few weeks finding bugs, tweaking things etc and now it seems to work pretty well!  I have no doubt that once we open the 'flood gates' here we'll find lots more to do and get lots more feedback about how to improve things.  I have a feeling that at first, lots of folks won't appreciate the change but I bet those people will get used to it!

So here is the plan:  Tomorrow night at 7:00 PM we will lock down both boards (this one, and the new one).  We'll do one final update (move all the content here to there one more time).  Once that is done we'll point the DNS at the new forum and hopefully everything will work out fine.  You should be able to log in as usual.  For security reasons, most of you will have to enter your password twice the first time.

Once you learn the new forum you'll be able to do everything you can do here and more.  You can still upload photos (again the limit will be 150K on those)and there are lots of other features that we're not currently used to.

So - 7:00PM MST tomorrow, this board will vanish and the new one will appear.  It will take time, some folks may see just a bit of down time, some may see up to a day or so.  Hopefully it will go smoothly and we won't get too much hate mail!

Thanks to everyone for all the help.

I apologize, that maybe one feature we don't get and I'm not sure how you can save that.  You could take notes about the story title and search those stories out I expect, otherwise - I'm not sure.

absolutely no need for you to apologise danb !

i've been using the hot list as a file for posts i like to reference.

it got about 60 entries.

i tried to save the links  in a folder in my documents but they are coming out as a numbered file with no title .

i found i can also save them individualy on my favorite list where they do have a title.

I can't think of a better way to "wave goodbye":

Thanks to everyone for the inspiration and support.  Looking forward to many more years sharing ideas with you all.  Special thanks to the late Mr. ZUBBLY for his contributions.  Everything I learned from him is still the backbone of my success building my own wind turbines.

I'm gonna miss the following:

  1. the opportunity to go play with my dogs

  2. get another cup of coffee

  3. build a concrete form

  4. vacuum form some fiberglass blades

  5. answer phone surveys

  6. check the air in my trucks tires

  7. mow the grass

  8. plant the garden

  9. go grocery shopping

  10. clean the lint out of my navel

These were all things I had time to do waiting for pages to load with Scoop, not all the time.

tongue in cheek....

Almost as cute as danB's pink cat in the picture on the new board!

The time was often well used other times just an exercise in patience.

Should be lightning fast after tomorrow.

I'm looking forward to the new software.

Maybe you can put a parody of the scoop icon on the new site.

Does it have a Newbies section or similar function ?

Just a few more hours to go..

Before I forget thank you for even being there. It is an indespensible site and I gratefully accept whatever is there,....  you hear the but comming I bet.

Two suggestions/requests I would offer are  1.  limit the number of photos and allow a reasonable photo size. Some of our members have their life story in tiny, lo rez photos setting there in their info section. Set a number limit and let's move away from trying to dumb down our photos. We can delete photos when we need to add more. My dynosaur camera [ 1.4 mega pixels ] produces lo medium and hi quality photos. I mosly shoot medium resolution. I cannot shrink my photos enough to up load some of them. 150 kb is the size of a text file. Not a modern photograph. This seems like a left over from the dos days. Computers have six gigabytes of ram or more and terabytes of storage space. This is more that most servers had ten years ago.

And 2.  pretty please, automatic thread reply notice?
