Wind Blade Angle
« on: December 14, 2014, 09:57:34 PM »
I am trying to figure out wind blade design.  My calculations indicate a tilt back at about 11 degrees at the fat end and 3 degrees at the tip.  Does anyone know better?

What diameter and TSR are you planning?  IIRC you said it was 8' diameter.  "Fat end" is relative, but it doesn't sound like enough.

Plugging a 2.44m prop into Alton's calculator, with a TSR of 7 I get:

Station   Station Radius   Blade Angle In Degrees
1   0.12   40.1
2   0.24   21.8
3   0.37   13.4
4   0.49   9.3
5   0.61   6.8
6   0.73   5
7   0.85   3.8
8   0.98   2.8
9   1.1   2
10   1.22   1.4

I am planning on an 8ft diameter windturbine.  I was basing my caculations on carving information and math.  Can you please send me any websites that explaln you email a little better.  Thank you,

I found Alton's calculator.  Is there a website on a diagram of some of the variable define?

This contains a great blade design and hughs book gives you the turbine plans that are most up to date.

Hughs web site has stuff also.
Good luck

Thank you for the website.  It was extremely helpful.  I was wondering, do most still make the wedges in step 6 of MAKING THE BLADE.

If you like the look, add them. I really don't think you will see any performance difference, the centre of the blades contribute little to the power. I cant see the wedges adding any strength.

Here's another link you might find useful.  It has better description of the variables than Alton's.  It is part of a site by Ed Lenz:
http://www.windstuffnow.com/main/blade_design_help.htm

And, more from Hugh:
http://www.scoraigwind.com/download/windrotord.pdf
http://www.scoraigwind.com/wpNotes/bladeDesign.pdf

Hugh also has a blade design spreadsheet (similar to Alton's), in Excel.  If you go to his site, then follow the link to his "old site" you should find it.

If you're carving wood blades you might also find this helpful:

Probably more than you wanted, but fun reading.  Good luck.  ~ks
