Solar off grid battery bank recharging with a 17KW Generac generator. Is it possible to automatically recharge a 48V battery bank by having the Generac come on before the inverter shuts the system down, when the batteries get too low, due to snow cover, and shut down when the batteries are charged again? The solar company  technician worked 5 hours yesterday trying to figure out how to set this up. Doesn't the Generac 120VAC electric have to be converted to 48VDC to go back into the batteries? The battery bank is 24- 2VDC Trojan and the inverter is Outback. If so how can this be done? Thanks.

You don't say which Outback you have , so it's hard to say. But the process is generally like this: The inverter has a charger built in. When you connect AC from the genny, it takes care of rectifying and stepping down the voltage. If the inverter has genny support, it takes care of the start-charge-stop cycle. To set it up, look in the manual for your inverter.
