First test of Hughs 4ft alt.
« on: May 10, 2008, 02:59:46 AM »
I joined the alt and the prime driver test motor today. I did a few voltage test to confirm proper output for both star and "Jerry Rigged".

The #s are right on where they should be. Now I can add the fullwave bridge rectifiers and continue with all the other testing.

Here are a few pictures. First I brought the rpm up till the ac voltage per coil is 5v.

These are no load tests. Next I configured the alt star. Star produce 17.2 volts between any 2 connection of 3 phase.

"Jerry Rigged" produced 20 volts on any one of the phases.

Here are the pictures.

This is the 5 volt 1 coil.

This is the star reading.

This is the "Jerry Rigged" reading.

OK, Testing continues.

jerry,

using this construction method,

how do you set the mag/ coil clearance.

on one of the photos there were a few paint stir sticks laying around.

i am guessing that you fix your stator tight to the speaker chassis and then set the rotor position using some spacers and then lock it in place with those collars?

There are 2 alin set screws on the shaft to hub adaptor. I just slide the rotor to the desired position the tighten the set screws.

Yes the stator is secured to the speaker basket.

I did some no load DC voltage test today.

I ran the rpm up till one coil mesured 5 volt. This happened at 492 RPM.

In star at this RPM dc output is 22.5 volts. In "Jerry Rigged" the voltage is 25.5.

I think the real diferance will show up under load. There is a allmost sign wave shape on the scope.
