L-16-Hs back from the dead.
« on: May 14, 2008, 02:43:41 AM »
I've been baby sitting a group of L-16-Hs for a freind. They are 6 volt. most read 2 to 3 volts. He said they won't take a charge.

I've been pulse charging them each about a week at a time.

Most have 1 bad cell. The last one started out with all 3 cells reading in the watter area on my SG meter.

After a week of pulse charging the voltage is holding around 6.3 at rest and the SG in all 3 cells are around 1320 to 1350. This was after a week just setting unatended.

I havn't had time to do a load test yet. I'll load them down with a couple 100 amps and see how they do.

He was going to recycle them but they may still have some life left?

I'll do the load test in a few days. I've been pulsing them at about 28 amps 8 HRs aday for a week each.

Nice goin' Jerry...wish I had someone like you

around here...had a neighbor lives in the trailer

park behind us ...kept having trouble with his

battery needing a charge....so I kept loaning him

my battery charger....friends kept telling him

why his car wouldn't start ....solenoid, starter,

bad ground etc....so about the third time I came

over and checked the battery after charging about

an hour...it read 12.65v car started...shut it off...12.05v

car had a hard time starting...put

the charger back on for about an hour...checked

voltage after disconnecting charger...about 12.45v

(friend of my neighbors looking over my shoulder)

'Hmmm....little over 12 volts should be good enough'

I say, 'No...should be ...maybe at least 13 volts....'

This guy says 'NO it's a 12 Volt Battery'

and I say...'it's not fully charged at 12 volts'

He says I've worked on cars for over 20 years

, and I've never seen a battery over 12 volts

only when they're charging...that's why you have

to have a higher voltage to charge one ! '

so he has me check it while the car is running...

( it reads 13.75)

See...!?? , he says

What can I say? (can't argue with a guy that

runs a tow truck for some garage, has

a motorcycle that cost over $20,000, and installed

a new set of pipes (bike) that cost over $800 can you?)

.......Couple of days later the guy with the car

trouble comes over and tells me he found what

the trouble was....He had to get a new battery

( Whoa !....Really) LOL !

Like I said....wish you could have been here !

Fun in the sharpest corner of Ohio ...Conneaut !
