driving leds
« on: October 19, 2004, 09:59:06 PM »
Hi everyone,

I have played with small LEDs before using small transformer chips and resistors,

which work good but what is the propper way to drive 1 watt and 3 watt LEDs?Some people have told me you need to use switchmode power supplies, but these seem expensive and there seems little info on this anywhere.

Thanks for your help,

Kind regards,

Mos

Are you talking about the Luxeon assemblies? Most other white LEDs run at around 3.6v times .02 amps.

Yes the luxeon type leds. Most people seem to drive them with a puck or other fancy expensive divices that I don't think is nessecary.

Thanks,

Just keep the current at or below what it calls for.

Keep it as cool as possible.

Be ready for disapointment.

Yeah. Those type of high-power LEDs require a heat sink, and a good one at that.
