Which magnets to use?
« on: October 27, 2008, 07:11:09 PM »
Hi!

I wonder which magnets I should use to build my pancake alternator! There are two of a choice:

- N52 50 x 25 x 10 mm

or

- N40 50 x 30 x 12 mm

Which one would be better or may get me "more power"?? Is there a formula to calculate that?

Thanks a lot!

Best,

Heiko

Use the cheapest. There is not a very large gain going from N40 to 50. I think the larger area of the N40 combined with greater thickness will win out and give you a slightly better alternator but if the N50 option is way cheaper then go for it.

Not easy to do the maths but basically the change of grade will be compensated by the change in area. For the same gap density the N40 will let you use use a stator nearly 5mm thicker and that gains you a lot of winding space to use thicker wire.

Hi!

Thank you very much for this quick and informative answer! I will buy the N40 magnets!

I would like to buy them here:

http://www.neodymium.de/

Click on "Quader groß" on the left navigation bar! The N52 version would cost around 1,30 Euro more than the N40 version (I think that might be around one US Dollar difference if I can remember the cange rate correctly)!

Best,

Heiko

P.S. I looked the change rate up ... one N52 magnet would cost 20,80 US $ and one N40 would cost 19,16 US $ ... 25% discount if you order more than 10 magnets! :-)
