Decimals to fractions
« on: January 31, 2010, 02:48:16 PM »
A reasonably priced drill press has more end play in the quill that the difference between 0.86 and whatever the nearest fraction would be in sixty-fourths. We are working in wood at this stage of the game. I checked in the home brew book and could not find a conversion chart for decimals to fractions. Ok I get 1.75, but how about a hint.... 0.86 equals......?  0.61 equals.....? Thanks for the help.

I did the 86 over 100 math and 43/50 makes me feel somewhat like bevis or butthead. I should have asked for a drill bit size I can buy at a hardware store. Remember when people who worked there new stuff?

.86 as a fraction only reduces to 86/100 and therefore, does not work out evenly into 64ths. If that's what you want, though, all you have to do is multiple .86 by 64, giving you 55.04/64. Close enough for me!

This is pretty basic math. Never seen a "chart' myself but it may exist.

1/8" is.125"

1/16" is 0625"

The rest should be easy basic adding or multiplying.

Some decimal values will not be a sensible fraction you will find on a tape measure.

Best I can do is give you the info to sort it out.

And there it is.

I'm begining to see the light. It doesn't look like there is a good way to express that number on a regular ruler. I'll pass on the drill bit tho. It would cost alot, guess I need a ruler with decimals on it.

the closest to .086 in 64ths would be 5/64ths, which is .07812

now you can creep a little bit close to the number if you go 32nds. So 3/32 is .09375

You might know this but to convert to metric just remember the magic number 25.4

Lets say you want to convert 3/8ths of an inch ( or in decimel.375)to metric

just take .375 (always convert your fractional tolerence to a decimel) and multipy by 25.5 ...whic gives us 9.525mm

To go from metric to decimel just divide by 25.4...Lets say we need to drill or ream a hole to 11.11 mm, but all we have is fractional stuff laying around and need to hit the hole as close as we can.

We take 11.11 divded by 25.4 which gives us .4374, which is just one-ten thousandths off from 7/16ths of an inch which is .4375 sometimes conversion is our best friend!

Here's a quick and dirty fractional to decimel chart:

DanB,

I am too lazy to count so to how many decimal places did you calculate Pi ?

Dan, LOL!

Looking back on it,I think it would have just been better if I had just done this, intead of all that cutting and pasting....sorry guys:

Dang Dan, talk about a shcolarly reply..... I thank you verbosely. I felt guilty after my post to you guys and did some more looking around on the web instead of working on my wife's pot rack and came to this conclusion. 7/8ths  [ .875 ] seems pretty close to .86 so if I fudge the line on the negative side I should be ok. I imagine the width of a slightly dull pencil mark is probably close to the difference between the two numbers.

Since we are hand winding on a hand built winder with naturally varying amounts of tension why would the you guys pick such a critical number? No two hand wound coils are going to be exactly the same tension or have the same resistance if you measure out to the hundredths of an ohm. Especially on a digital ohm meter. My Fluke 87 changes it's mind every .3 seconds. No that my self supporting rationalizations are over....

Is there some reason I should not use 7/8's and 21/32's? That is the question.

Thanks to everyone for the very useful tables. I'm saving them all to my solar/building folder. That's where the wind stuff lives too. I can not see all the other posts in this thread from this reply screen.

Nice one Dan, I think I'll print that for future reference.

I am not sure specifically which dimensions you're referring to. I often mix up decimals and fractions when talking about drill sizes and such.

Regarding the coils - the number of turns is pretty critical, you can be off a bit one way or the other and... who knows for sure, it might work better!

Regarding measuring resistance with your fluke meter... with coils and stators you can kind of forget about that.  Perhaps a 48Volt stator has high enough resistance that you could measure it, but generally the resistance in these is so low that a normal ohm meter isn't useful -resistance in the leads, and even how hard you press the leads against the copper is significant.

I wouldnt worry about measuring resistance in coils, so long as the number of turns is about right, and the wire gauge isright it should work fine.  If you want to measure the finished stator, perhaps the best way is to hook it to a power supply, (or a battery) and measure voltage and current.

Another good way to estimate resistance (if you're sure you got it hooked up right) is simply weigh it.  From there you can use a wire gauge chart if you know the gauge of wire, and the weight... to determine resistance.

Hey Dan, my concern was the dimensions for the pins [nails] we wind the coils around. Specifically, how much rounding up or down to the nearest fractional equivalent from 0.86 and 0.61, would effect the physical distance between the coils on the stator and their performance. It doesn't seem like it would matter if it was close to the decimal figure. But the numbers used were pretty precise for wood working so I want to be sure it's ok to fudge a little.
