Equalize Battery Bank
« on: March 01, 2008, 04:28:40 PM »
  Hello,

I have looked on the board and the web trying to get and answer. Can I Equalize my Batteries Bank if my turbine is running power to the batteries at the same time or should i what till there is no wind to do this? I am not sure if doing both at the same time will do Damage?   thanks.. if you can help..

Impossible to answer your question with the information available but certainly it is going to have no effect on the turbine.

If you only have wind then you will not do much equalising on a clam day. If you have other supplies then much depends on your charge controller and other factors. Normally the wind would help you but everything depends on whether you are doing the equalising manually or using some algorithm in a charge controller which might get confused.

I have a c-35 Xantrex contoller. I can Manually Equalize with this controller, but nothing telling me if Turbine Is powering and Controller is Equalizing at the same time if this will Damage the Bank.

Just not sure...I have one cell in a 12 volt system that has

just a bit lower Gravity then all the others.

5 cells with 1.275 sg and the other One cell is under 1.250 sg. don't know if that is that far out but its nice to see them close to the same. Voltage is holding at 12.75 the past 24 hrs.

Assuming the C35 is connected as a diversion controller you can equalise from another source and from the wind as long as the dump load doesn't exceed 35A at the equalising voltage and that you don't supply enough extra current to exceed the dump capability. If you do then the controller will loose control of the process. Even this is unlikely to do any damage unless you have a monster of an external supply.

If you have enough wind to be doing a fair bit of dumping then wind alone could do the job, if not then you will need another charging source.
