My 18 foot Dual Rotor is up
« on: May 22, 2006, 02:28:48 AM »
First of all I need to thank Wilbur and Flux for bailing me out several times, otherwise this would still be in the basement. I wanted a 18 inch Dual Axial Rotor,24 mags each rotor 2x1x1/2 18 coils,3phase,12 volt. I have 12 batterys, 2 volt each and hooked up to serve 12 volts. Each single battery weighs 250 pounds and has 1075 amp hour capacity. Hooked the way they are, gives me 2150 amp hour capacity. I am like everyone else out there and wanted more power. Well now Ive got it and found out this puppy can put out some juice when you get some wind. I had to keep it braked alot of the time. I now have 3 C 60 Trace controllers in my panel hooked up to 4 600 watt 12 volt water heating elements. I used a 40 gallon electric water heater and added 2 more heat element ports. It now has 4 elements in the tank. I am going to add another tank, with 4 more elements very soon. I will put a picture of this tank in my photos next time I,m on here. This dual rotor is spinning 3 wood blades, 8.5 feet in length with a over all radius of 18 feet and I believe I will built a bigger prop, 10 foot each blade before winter comes. My 18 coils are wound with 4 in hand 14.5 gauge magnet wire, I think it was either 25 or 28 turns. It kicks into battery voltage,at 72 R.P.M  I have doubled up on the rectifiers, so I have 6 rectifiers on a large heat sink. I have it wired with 2/0 battery cable. I am going to build a new 24 volt stator for this machine and change my whole setup hopefully before winter comes. You will also notice in my photo,s that I use a slip-ring set up on my machines. I doubled up on the brushes on this particular machine and may add a third set if it requires them. I have been building my own slip-rings and brushes for 7 years. These slip-rings are brass and heavy at 3 pounds each,2 required and are seperated from one another with high tempature teflon bushings. My brake switch is made with 3/4 inch copper pipe. I have had this machine up for 3 weeks and it starts charging at 8 m.p.h. Normally we see 8-14 m.p.h winds and I see 30 - 100 amps. Since it,s been up on 2 occcassions, the wind gusted up to 25 mph and it furled showing 200 amps and then my digtal meter went over its rating and blacked out. The meter came back on after the wind quit, so I ordered another meter that will handle more amps. I plan to build another Dual Rotor this winter. It will be of higher voltage, probably larger magnets and bigger disc.I have also ordered another set of batterys.  Any body got any ideas. Thanks again Wilbur and Flux.  Mitcamp signing out

200 amps!!!  MY GAWD!!

That's welding range there!!!

If you decide to just replace this mill with your new one, please keep me in mind for selling the current one to!!  Sounds like a BEAST!!

Hi Mitcamp. Nice set up indeed. I for one will be very interested in how the water heating works, keep us posted.

Great fun, Harrie

Well done. That's quite a good performance for a large machine at 12v

That is a nice unit . Good work on those slip rings . If 'm not mistaken that is the outer tub to a westinghouse washer your using for cover . That crane must have set you back or is that a freebe say it ain't so. Get some amps and go forward.

Looks really good.

About the slip rings:

How are this springs done there?

It would be really nice to hear more information about the dumb load and about your water heating system.

i agree , four in hand of 15.5 gauge , makes for a low resistance stator , which is the only way to get  Amperage like that

you've done well

I have questions mostly regarding sliprings so I will make another post today. I am having problems with my picture size. They are 640x480 and I guess they take up a lot of room.

Question from harrie, I have a 40 gal elec water modified with a extra port on the bottom and a extra port on the top. I use 1 trace controller C60 in diversion mode on the bottom set of 12 volt elements and I use my other C60 in load mode on the top set of elements.

Wilbur,I wound my coils with 14.5 gauge, not 15.5 gauge, and I was only experimenting when I built this 18 foot machine. I was really getting a headache when you and Flux helped me out. The stator could burn out tomorrow, but I would wire another for 24 volts. I should have done that at the start. I am looking to build a bigger one this winter. Thanks, for the help, I owe you one.

Watch for my post on Sliprings, later today.     Mitcamp

Tom W  Will you tell me in laymans terms how I resize my pictures. I have my camera set at the smallest size it will take 640x480 Somewhere on one of the pages it said I can resize after I upload them to this site. I looked it all over and I cannot find how to do it. I,m not much of a computer guy, if you know what I mean. I would have answered your request sooner but I,ve been looking into this resize thing. Computer illeriate I am, if thats the right spelling      Mitcamp

Mitcamp,

There are several resizing programs out there.  I use "The GIMP" or "Ifranview".  Both are free. "GIMP" has a LINUX and Windoze program. I saved you image and resized it in GIMP - time to do such - 50 seconds - from click to open to "Save as MC1.jpg" The tool I used was the Image/scale image tool - I scaled to 550 width.  I have now reposted the file at 1/3 the original file size and larger format.

It is not nice to tie large files to a post - IMO. Some folks have no choice as to the speed of their ISP and it takes a lot of time to download 2.4 MB of picture. In some places the time on Internet is paid for by the minute. These places are normally those with slow speeds also.

I think something that is not clear is that "resizing" a photo on this site only affects its display size not the file size.  Using some html features, you can make your image display smaller than normal (even thumbnail size) but it will still take 10 minutes to load on dialup if it's a 2MB file.

The idea is to use an image editing application to shrink the amount of data in the file.  Think of it this way.  You wouldn't go to the trouble to send someone a 50MB AIFF CD quality audio file to listen to through their 5 transistor AM radio.

mitcamp;

Well, I use either Linux or Mac OS X so I don't know any windows software to use.

If I have to resize I run them through a command line program called "mogrify" which is part of imagemagik in Linux. On the Mac I use iphoto but mogrify is easier and quicker.

I see Ron posted some useful info for Windows users.

Cheers.

Unless it's one month of continuous audio ;)

The point being:

  1. resize your pictures to less than 100 kB
  2. resize your pictures to 640x480 (or less)

If you don't do (2), you will need 2 monitors next to eachother to view the entire picture, or will have to scroll left and right, up and down, trying to remember what was on the left as you are viewing the right. VERY annoying.

If you don't do (1), people on dialup will be cursing a lot as they are waiting.

In my experience, people tend to make the same mistake twice, i.e. both (1) and (2). Personally I find (2) more annoying than (1), but only because I have fast internet acces. If I hadn't, I'd hate both (1) and (2) equally.

Also, I tend to take people who don't resize less serious and engaged (which is a prejudice, I admit) and tend not to answer these posts, because they annoy me too much.

Peter.

Thanks Tom W and others for explaining the sizing of photos of me. I have downloaded "Photo Finale QS" It tells me how big my photos are and allows me to make them smaller. Much appreciated Mitcamp

Hi Mitcamp, My camera came with software to work with the pictures. Did you have to down load anything the first time you pluged your camera into the computer? Mine is called photo impressions, and fun house. Also when you plug your camera into the computer a screen will pop up. It will ask what you want to do with your pictures. One of the choices should be to edit to save. If you want to keep the ariginal size and have a copy smaller just for e-mail and internet useage you will need to save as, and not save. They will give you both choices. When you get your picture up on the screen hit edit, then hit resize. Then deleat the pixel numbers in the top to 600, and the other should automaticly adjust to around 400. Then click the save, and then a screen will come up and you can choose save, or save as. Make sure you save it as jpeg. It will ask you were you want to save it to. You can type in a heading for your folder. If you don't it will probly go to your pictures. Its a good Idea to keep them in a seperate folder in your pictures so when you go to use them they are easy to find. I thought I didn't have the editing software, but when I looked around a little and started to work with the pictures I found three places on my computer that resize pictures. You maybe used to selecting save to folder because it is what you normaly do, and it will be on that question when you plug your camera into the computer. Look and see if there is any other questions in the list when you first get the pop up when you plug your camera in. I hope this helps, John.
