Helicopter Rotor Blades
« on: October 05, 2005, 05:27:03 AM »
Since we all love to recycle, I thought I'd ask if anybody has tried using helicopter rotor blades as a wind turbine?

Since the blades are usually designed to operate with tips speeds approaching the speed of sound, and the lift loads can get quite high, I'd say that they're over-designed for the task.  That said, it's all built for you....

I know, some of you will say it's a crazy idea.  But that doesn't mean someone hasn't tried it anyway...

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.
System spec: 135w BP multicrystalline panels, Xantrex C40, DIY 10ft (3m) diameter wind turbine, Tri-Star TS60, 800AH x 24V AGM Battery, Xantrex SW4024

I'm sure it would work fine! In fact I'm part way through a project to do just that...

Unfortunately I've had to put this project (along with most others...) on hold so as to stay married. There is a limit to how many dead microwaves a wife will suffer at her back door (only about 20 to go :) I have also had to commit to selling our property so who knows where I'll stick my 10kW turbine when/if its finished!

Virgis posted a story about one in Lithuania a while back, it was a huge machine.  Unfortunately the pictures are not there anymore, not sure why.  But the story is here:

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

I see a small 6 blade rotor  on the nacelle ,a yaw mechanism to keep the mill upwind.
There can be a brake  , or variable blades.
