Wind Speed Indicator
« on: April 03, 2010, 08:36:43 PM »
I scored a new toy the other day.

New to me. Used but in very good condition.

I now just need to buy or find

some indicating fluid or Gage oil

with a specific gravity of .826

Was a bit hard to find but it

seems that it only had maybe 3/4 Oz

or 4 Oz included with it.

If I do end up buying some

I'll get the 4 Oz size for the price.

The shipping might be bad on oil,

I didn't check yet.

Any ideas for substitution?????

I should just offer this up for sale.

I'm still just stocking up in storage

all my RE toys and Dreams.

But, I'll keep on dreaming

and just have a lot ready when

 things line up for me.

:)

That looks like a wind-tunnel instrument.  If so, not really suited for reading variable wind speeds from variable directions.  Probably very sensitive, though, and possible to calibrate.  I don't remember what the fluid should be used.  I thought it was ethylene glycol, but a quick google search I see its SG is 1.1 sorry.

No one believes the theory except the one who developed it. Everyone believes the experiment except the one who ran it.

I also have only seen these used as flow gauges in ducting/tunnels.

"variable wind speeds from variable directions"

Tried to Insert an image here

"Rooftop-mounted pickup reads wind velocities from 0 to 80 MPH directly on liquid-filled tube."

The Red pick up end has full swiveling 360 deg.

And just breathing toward it with the one tube

held by my face I could feel it.

I look for the "blinker fluid", right

next to the headlight n tail light

fluid next I'm in a parts store.

;)

coldspot;

Since it needs to be in clean air to operate properly you should stop by the local hardware store and pick up a Sky Hook to hang it from!

Aisle 6, next to the Board Stretchers.

Happy Easter!

brake fluid could be OK.  The liquid should be solvent free.  Acrylic won't like solvents.

These units are common for measuring air flow in ducting.  Response time is proportional to the length of tubing.  Low viscosity liquid is essential.

Most of these older style air flow measuring units are for a permanent visual indicator of filter status on an air conditioning plant, usually across the evaporator.

I would think there are better ways to measure windspeed, ie a cup anemometer.

Brake fluid will take the paint off your car with just a little spill or spray from a bubble while filling the master cylinder.  So I wouldn't put it in anything plastic.
