Question on 24 v bat charging
« on: January 23, 2005, 06:07:57 PM »
I have a 24volt backhoe that I have trouble statring in the cold of a Canadian winter. I was wondering if I had a 12 volt  battery charger on say 60 amp boost, across the 24 volt if this would help starting. Or if someone had specs. on building a 24 volt charger/booster?

If your charger is putting out less voltage than the present voltage of the batteries, then you won't get much or anything at all

On the farm we used to have several pieces of equipment that used 24V starting systems but everything else was 12V they had two 12V batteries wired in series for the starter. I used to boost by hooking to one of the batteries although boosting wasn't the prefered method of assisting cold starts. A block heater and ether work best as they help the engine start quicker rather than crank the engine harder. As I'm sure you know if you crank a 24V starter for long you'll start to smell the magic smoke coming out.

Block heater is best. Use ether sparingly.

A 12v charger will not reach 24v.

Best to get a small 24v charger. Cheaper and more reliable that a quickie homebrew charger.

Home brew would be easy with a 18 or 20v transformer and a few more parts.
