Magnetic Field from 9 volt battery
« on: February 07, 2005, 04:19:39 PM »
I am looking for ideas for a science project.  I'm using a 9 volt battery to create a magnetic field inside a straw to launch a tiny magnet.  So far the idea is to wrap the straw with insulated wire, hook it to a basic switch so I can control when to turn it on, drop in the magnet, flip the switch and watch it "launch."  Well, this idea isn't working out.  Any ideas or suggestions?

This gets a bit complicated.  What you need is a "sense" coil to detect when the magnet reaches the proper spot.  A voltage spike is then generated that is amplified by electronics and used to cause the electromagnet to be energized giving the desired result.  There are a number of novelty toys around that use this principle to simulate perpetual motion.  Have fun.

Do a google search for gauss gun or railgun, there's lots of people that have played with this concept & posted their progress.

I think it would work if you wound the coil around the outside of the straw for a length between 1/2 and 1 inch. Use some fairly small wire between 20 and 26 gage. And a high number of turns, around 100 or 200 turns.

Place a plug inside the straw so that the magnet will will not drop inside the coil, but sit even with the top windings. Be sure to use a DC voltage, the 9 volt battery you are talking about should be fine, 2 or more 9 volt batteries in series would be stronger. Use a momentary contact switch so you won't drain your batteries or heat up your coil.

The magnet will need to be oriented correctly North/South wise. Turned the wrong way and it will be sucked toward the coil, turned the correct way and it will be propelled away from the coil.

You might want to put the plug into the straw first, and then wind the coil onto it.

I am also thinking that the plug inside your straw should be made from a ferrous metal which will amplify the electromagnetic effect.

Might use a xenon flash tube as found in pawn shop items for

camera's. Would have to fish the leads out to hook to the

staw wire wrap but that snap of voltage could either collapse

the straw or stick the magnet into the ceiling. It will

fire up a the flash and the coil together, it you like.

There are are small 12v condensors found in lawnmowers or

chainsaws points ign systems blister packs on rack that could be

charged up and then discharged for a snap to the staw.

Cute trick is charge 1 up and toss to a 'friend' for a snap.

9 V battery can smoke some fine wires so beaware.

Maybe could get the straw to collapse around some water

or oil for a jet show too. On the extreme of this some

hobbiests shrink coins by the magnetic impact.

Also if the tube is say aluminum and then drop the

magnet down the hole you may learn some other stuff.

Hope you don't get hurt or into too much trouble by this.
