Over revved Generator
« on: February 20, 2005, 06:01:48 PM »
Today I accidentally over revved an AR100 Voltmaster 10kw generator. Now there is on power output. I have checked all the circuit breakers and they are OK. It turns fine by hand, smooth bearing movement, no drag. It runs smooth on the engine as well, no bad noises, smooth. No smoke either. It is a brushless generator with capacitors designed for 3600rpm. I think it hit about 5000rpm before I got it stopped. There was no load on it at the time. However it did to have some drag as I shut it down. None now though. Do you think this generator is toast. Could it be that the capacitors are blown. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks ... Ken

Check capacitors first, then diodes on rotor, I doubt that anything else has died.

Good luck.  Flux

If it was unloaded there can't be much wrong.

Ok, it's been a long time since I've been around some of this. I can't remember how to check capacitors. Thanks for the help, I'm feeling hopeful about this situation. Ken

A multimeter on ohms range will check for a short circuit.

Unless it has a capacitance range it is difficult to check for reduced capacity, substitution is the most reliable way but not always convenient.

I checked the capacitors checked "open". I need to take off the end plate to get to the diodes, will I have to remove them to get a good check? If so it means pulling out the armature, otherwise I can reach them through the case. Thanks again for your help.    Ken
