Tripp lite makes a good inverter, that particular model sells for around $1000.00 new. I was acquainted a fellow that runs his workshop off of two Tripp lite units... seems to accommodate his saws alright... but one at a time...  The induction surge is a killer...that's why he has two inverters! The lights run off the house inverter or are DC. Now as for provantage I can't tell you...

I use a old one. 12V 1200W?

Weighs a lot, maybe 12x12x18", just about bullet proof.

It handles surges far better than the light weight cheaper inverters.

Most saws, sanders, grinders... are no problem.

Pricy, but I got it cheap ($20?), brand new, after Y2K.  :)

PWM sine wave, which was what i was also going to ask about. but i just found something

on their website: http://www.tripplite.com/support/glossary/detail.cfm?mode=1&range=8

"Describes an alternate AC waveform to sine wave and PWM sine wave. Considered a mid-level waveform by most, desirable for all but the most sensitive of critical of computing applications. Rather than the smooth arc typically associated with a sine waveform, a PWM sine wave offers several rectangular steps to help mimic the energy supply of a sine wave. During the 1990's most manufacturers of standby and line interactive UPS systems began providing products with PWM sine wave output. See PWM sine wave and sine wave."

for all but the most sensitive of computer applications? too bad they don't specify which applications those are. i'll email them and see if regular pc's are ok on this. thanks to everyone for the relplies. Reuben

I think they have a good reputation.  But - at the price (if they're upwards of $1000) I'd look to a pure sine wave inverter.  Lots of loads (motors and such) will be much happier and start more easily.  I think perhaps 'the one to watch' right now is 'Magnum Energy', if Im not mistaken they have a 2800 watt inverter, pure sine wave with a built in charger for a bit over $1000.

If I ever figure out what's in the box then maybe I can think outside of it.

They have a plant and R and D here in Chicago.  It is located in what used to be Speigle Catalogs old warehouse on 35th St, or what is left of it.  They completely remodeled the part that they use.  A while back my work took me by there.  They were real nice folks and I was impressed that they actually make stuff here as most of the manufacturing seems to have gone to the cheaper labor markets now.  I discussed a little lightning protection with one of the guys there and looked over some surge suppressors, which appeared well made to me.  Rich Hagen

I have the 3000W model that i used to power table saw lathe etc . advise you to get the surge start model. I had to put  slack  on  belt of table saw or tripplite would trip :)

called tripplite and was told should have got the delayed start model. :'(

it was a good inverter though I  down sized to a 1000 watt .

hopefully their newer inverters are better than those of the mid 90's
i had horrible luck with several of their pv550 model units, several failed
after only a few minutes driving a drop light, one failed with no load attached
and tripplite sent me repair parts to fix them all, but they continued to be junk.

those were square wave units of moderate cost (about 250 bucks) back then.

it left me with such a bad taste in my mouth for their products that i wouldn't walk
across the street for a new one today, even if it was free.

now i realize that much has changed, and they probably make a better inverter today, but
my attitude has not changed.

ymmv of course

I had this exact inverter self-destruct on me recently.
I _strongly_ suggest you open it up and replace the capacitors.
On mine, several cap's were split at the ends.
Apparently these are the cheapest obtainable cap's and you can expect they will fail sooner rather than later.
Splitting cap's has been an ongoing problem in the cheap PC motherboard department for a while now.

See my pictures in this thread http://fieldlines.com/board/index.php/topic,144742.0.html
