Hording incandescent and the "L Prize"
« on: June 20, 2010, 10:09:51 PM »
CBS Evening News ran a story tonight entitled "The Changing Shape of Light".
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/06/20/eveningnews/main6601088.shtml
There's a good chance that the story's address will change with time, hopefully a search for the title will find it later.

Watching the story about the US phase out of incandescent bulbs made me think of back when people started hording R12 refrigerant.  I knew a few people doing it and some of them made some pretty decent scratch.  I talked to one of the guys a few years ago and at that time he still had something like 400 lbs. left.
Anyone here thinking about hording incandescent?

The CBS story also mentioned the L Prize and also shows some pretty nifty oled panels.

I'm trying to think of why I would want to hoard them.  There is nothing worth anything in them so far as I can tell.  And I think as the years go by the only useful application they have is as a heater?

I want to hoard ammo and salt! ;)

Ha, already buried that stuff for Y2K. Figured it is as secure as I can make it now 10 years later and grown over :D.

Well, ammo, MRE's, grain sealed in CO2 filled cans, powder, primers and lead.

Sorry for the topic drift but it is about hoarding.

What will we do for fridge and oven lites if incadescents get banned?

Probably buy them in Canukistan and smuggle them in and create yet another contraband subculture like the pot heads!  ???

Carry on.

Yeah ,  I work in a Concert Hall Theater and I wonder what will we do if incandescents are banned.
I also have a small lighting system that I rent out all the time, it uses 120watt floodlights.
Have been thinking about hording some of those floodlights.

Tom, the pinko soviets up here started banning the incandescents a few years ago.

The devil's in the details.  The ban covers some types of lights, not others.  Don't hoard the bulbs that aren't going off the shelves.

The real piss-off for me is that the spirally things dont FIT in 75% of the fixtures in my house!

I'm doing pretty well with CFLs.  They finally made them bulb shaped, so I can use them with my lamps that have shades that clip onto the bulbs.  I even found some a few months ago with the mini fittings for pendant fixtures.

If somebody could point me to some that give warm light and work really well on a dimmer, I'd be almost entirely off incandescents.

We stayed with a friend last month, and she had 3 60w incandescents above the bathroom mirror.  I could feel the heat while I was shaving, something I had never noticed that back when I was using them myself.

That canukastan thing made me laugh ( yes I am canadian ). Funny part is that CFLs aren't safe and have already been modified with the extra bulb around them. They bulb is to block uv. Also there is mercury in them so don't brake them.. LOL.. They will likely require asbestos in firewalls again to make sure.. :)

Ohh, almost forgot. There are no regulations controlling CFL so a 1/5 bulbs produce a lot more UV then they should. Don't worry you need to be within a foot to effect you supposedly.

Better start buying LED replacements now. Wally World only has one LED with an Edison base so far. I was in there buying some lamps for an apartment I'm cleaning up for the landlord to rent. I told the clerks stocking the area they are behind the times selling cfl's with mercury in them and to get with the program.

Walmart and LEDs- soon.
The local Walmart has LED lights in the paint display.
Sam's Club had a >dozen types of overpriced LED lights 2~3 months ago.  "Name Brand" too, like GE or Sylvania?

Look out for the "tess" LED bulbs at Home Depot: I have some of essentially the same type here in the UK and they are good in both warm and cool variants.

It seems that there are businesses that are selling incandescent bulbs as heaters to get around the laws banning incandescent lights.

That's good.  I don't have to worry about my "Lava Lites" going extinct.

Thurmond,

No need to worry you can always convert your lava lamps to run on candle  or oil lamp power. ;D

Ive tried a couple of the led replacements from wally world with not much success !
If you lose 1 bulb in the cluster the whole thing goes out. They are rather pricey and dont put out as much light..
If you hook a lite to your battery bank youll find the incandescent uses the most next the cfl's and the led's use's the least electricity but short on lite.
so at this we use the CFL"S except a couple.
Bub73 is developing some led that work out pretty good when the smoke all stays in.
Our local pwr company is promoting the cfl's. I found the wal mart cheap brand of cfl's hold up pretty good for the price..
We have found the incandescent bulbs of late dont last very long no matter who's brand.

It seems to be LED lights in the upright freezers at Walmarts also
I can imagine that they just upgrade the front panels??
In Erie near the airport....I think they done it when they completely reorganized
everything and completely confused everyone.....but in spite of the expense.....
managed to lower prices everyday.....so I looked at their push button (waterproof) 3 LED lamps
for $5....then went to DollarTree and bought 5 for $1 each(but not waterproof).....awhh ...

I saw an engineering study on replacing florescent with LED lights in grocery store freezers, a significant portion of the savings was that the LED's produce less heat that needs to be removed by the compressor, as well as working better at low temps
