Water heater folks
« on: January 18, 2023, 07:15:42 PM »
Those of you heating water with your turbines...what elements are you using?  After fishing around the popular vendors' "48v" elements it turns out most of them are generic 120v or 240v elements that cost <$20 at lowes and they're only good for about 48v.  I need to burn off about 2000w at 65~70v and am struggling to find a suitable element I can use that's not something you have to order from China.

Thanks! Don't know why that one didn't come up when I was searching "48v heater element".  That'll probably work.

I find it a little amusing that all the different options on that one are the same heater element.

When your working with these type of elements they are considered "energized" or dynamic as to impedance under-load. They are limited to thermal  heating surface area (output). You may have to use forced circulation on the surface area on the water side.

I would weld about 4hours a day. We were welding aluminum 5356 with tungsten electrode. 350 AMP TIG. I would hold the torch bare handed.

This is the one i have.  It dumps about 2kw at my absorb voltage of 60v.  It is in still water with no agitation and has been good  for 4 years.  It also dumps excess solar power, so it runs maxed out almost every day of the summer.

It is controlled by a midnite classic aux port set to "waste not hi" and the main power is switched with a dc-dc solid state relay.

My link is china shipping, but i think you can hopedully find some us stocked ones.

I think ours are comparable to these:
https://www.kansaswindpower.net/dc_accessories.htm

We're doing pretty much the same thing as bigrockmtn, using a Classis controller and "Waste Not".  I suspect you are aware, but you cannot switch these with the standard tank (AC) thermostats.  We use solid state DC relays between the controller and the elements.
