12VDC power supply recommends?
« on: August 03, 2014, 10:38:09 AM »
Hi All,

I am FINALLY getting my 48VDC system going! The dual inverter set up passed it's first functional tests. Still have a ways to go, but it won't be long.

Since I won't have a 12VDC bank any more, I need a power supply for my trailer to run the furnace (5-7 amps) and some lights and various projects (another 5 amps). I'd like to get something decent quality and over sized so that I don't have to hear a fan run all the time. I'm thinking in the 20 to 25 amp range.

There are so many options out there and I don't want to end up buying crap. This power supply will be keeping me warm in the winter and keeping the lights on! Something less than $100 US would be good.

Thanks!

Jonathan

http://www.samlexamerica.com/products/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=149  Fully isolated input/output. Mouser sells these for $65 plus shipping. Model SD-150C-12

http://www.trcelectronics.com/View/Mean-Well/SD-150C-12.shtml  TRC Electronics sells them for less than $45 plus shipping.

The Samlex works from 36 to 72 volts. You could get 2 for about $100 and not have everything on one converter.  If one failed you would still have some power available without direct tapping a battery.

Sorry, I wasn't clear...

I need to go from 120VAC to 12VDC. I will no longer be running a direct battery bank connection to the trailer. I see that Samlex makes a 120VAC/12VDC-23amp model #SEC-1223. Over my budget a little, but worth it if high quality. Any idea if these are worth it?

The samlex is very high quality and what I use to power my ham radio gear of battery power gets to low. I only use samlex power converters, 120 to 12 and 24 to 12, even have one out in my astronomical observatory powering the telescope gear.

Steer clear of Alinco stuff... bad news in general

Alinco(rebranded chinese junk) is known as cheap junk in the ham radio community. Samlex has a reputation for high quality power products that are used by ham radio operators, in ambulances and other emergency vehicles, in aviation...

Alinco is much better than Samlex. This one new is $150 but is rated 32 amps and variable voltage with remote control capability. Radio Shack used to make a 25 amp version 22-510, but those are rare these days.

Made in China is usually poorer quality. Alinco is Japanese. The stuff they outsourced to China is not as good as made in Japan. I used to prefer Panasonic sla's, but when they began making them in China the quality suffered badly.

Everyone had trouble until recently with Tiawanese capacitor plaque.

Alinco radios have a reputation for breaking, and not being repairable because they used obsolete parts in the design because they found a stash of them somewhere. I use Samlex all over the house, radio desk has a 120/12 volt, 24/12 volt supplies, observatory a twin to the desk 120/12 volt supply. Samlex inverters on my solar setup...

Thanks all for the replies!

I looked on epay and found a new minus box Samlex 1223 for US$50. So I grabbed it and it arrives on Friday.

Thanks!

The supply came and I hooked it up. Quiet and stiff, loaded it to 10 amps and it kept the voltage spot on. With luck it will last! Thanks for the recommend dnix!

Didn't want to hear a fan run all the time. The samlex fan hasn't even kicked on yet, even with the furnace going and a bunch of lights.

Fan sin my 35 amp Samlex supplies are pretty quiet, rarely hear them even if they are on.
