I still exist.
« on: December 22, 2014, 10:15:55 PM »
It's been a tricky year.  More to come.  Stuff that happened 2 days ago.... 24' turbine on a 135 give or take tower (forgot), producing peaks so far over 7kW yay!

The alternator has 24" magnet rotors with 24 poles.  We're building a bigger one now (to be AC coupled on this off grid system)... w/26" rotors (24 poles) it should cut in at about 200V, and probably have a 25' give or take rotor.

Hey there!  Glad to see you're still at it.

This was the first incarnation.... with 20' blades and a 13' long tail boom.  Now she has 24' blades and a 16' tail.  Hope it doesn't burn out.

So far this machine is behaving well, furling reliably at about 6kW from what I hear.  Cannot wait to get up there in a couple of weeks and build the slightly larger machine.  That one will be 900' from the batteries, probably cutting in at 200V, we'll likely run high voltage DC to some new Morningstar MPPT controllers... or... (if they don't have those ready for us yet) it'll be high voltage AC through Ginlong inverters.  Should be fun stuff anyhow!  Damon... yes, thank you... hopefully this next year is better than the last two.  Sick of floods and fires and other stuff.  Nice to have some big wind turbines to work on.

Nice to hear what you are up too.  I'm still around as well, but very busy now days which makes it difficult to have a lot of fun (aka build stuff).   I know they take quite a bit of effort to write, but I always enjoy reading your build posts, and that massive machine sounds interesting.   Rich

I'll do an extensive write up on the machine soon after we know more about its behavior.

Any idea of wind speed for 6 KW?
My 20' makes power in low wind.

We do not have data acquisition on this tower yet... it will happen though.  And I had to leave the site before seeing much wind at all on it so....  no I really have no idea except that so far it's making everybody happy ;-)  (sometimes I think it's best to leave things that way and not to get too much information but we don't learn much that way...)

The scaling up in size has to be putting wood to its limits.  Do you do anything to lighten the blades, like hollowing out cores?

I don't know 'MattM', my first 12 footer, Hugh Piggotts design, was a set of lightweight Western Red Cedar blades, each approximately 6lbs, which after nearly 5 years have given me no trouble except a fresh coat of paint every year. But the leading edge some times losses paint and I get a bit of water ingress and that slightly unsettles the balance a bit.

After that all my 12 footers have fiberglass blades, each approximately 9 to 11lbs, with the same design. These were experimental and I am now on some Mk4b's. I now ensure that the internal rib is well joined to the root mounting block, a failure area, and the blade really totally foamed filled. Heck of a job getting each blade back into the mould quick, 6 seconds, and clamped down before the foam distorts the original shape before setting.

Another problem with hollow blades, especially with fiberglass, is water/moisture ingress and balance problems.

If I did blades again they wood definitely be solid wood.

Trouble is, getting good Red Cedar here in Europe is very difficult.
Everything is possible, just give me time.

I think we can go fairly larger with solid wooden blades, they're not that aweful heavy.  (that said I have no plans to go much bigger.... maybe 25' for the next turbine I'll be working on in 3 weeks)

Still to date (knock on wood) I've not had a blade failure from wooden blades unless something hit it or it hit something.

Yes it does make me grin.  I'm actually at the site now building a slightly larger one.  This 24' turbine is so far well behaved and producing a good bit of energy.  This is a tricky off grid site with some serious loads (a 120' square foot free standing walk in freezer, a 120 square foot walk in fridge... commercial kitchen, 3 buildings with in floor heating etc....).  Oh... and 7 different kinds of homebrew that just come out of the wall!  (it's kind of a fun place to play).

Sounds terrible Dan.  I hope they don't for you to check the homebrew for safety too often!  B^>

How much does each magnet rotor disk weight?

thanks

Hi:  Are you the same Dan that wasi on the tv show "Brainstormmers" or is that the other Dan?   I know that is not the same turbine because it was on a 45 foot tower and a rebuild anyway.  Thanks Arch

I just saw your pics.  Looks great.  I would love to know more about the particulars, like magnet sizes, wire size, anything you would like to share.  Email me direct if you can:  aka Yianie123.

Yianne123;
I took your email address off from here , there are way too many trolls and spammers looking for just what you had up here  :o.
IF you want to put it back on, knowing the risks , merely reply and put it in the reply.
That will also let the Moderators know you wish it to be left here.
It's usually better to send a PM to the individuals with your email address and such.

Hello !

Is there snow in Alaska like there is here in northern Finland about 4-6 inches ?

I find you project very inspiring and cool.
These wind turbines must for that reason in a deeper sense be of a timeless beauty, so that they do not in three or four decades hence burden a later generation with a heavy task of removing angular skeletons.....
