Info regarding Jacobs 1800W
« on: February 04, 2015, 08:14:51 PM »
Hi Everyone.
My name is Dale and I'm relatively new to this forum. I'm in the process of a complete restoration of a Jacobs Model 18 1800W, 32V machine. I will post a complete photo journal of my work if anyone is interested. I'm presently rebuilding the prop governor and I have remove the inner and outer prop shaft bearings. My machine appears to be in excellent shape for such an old machine. I know that many of these beautiful machines was shipped with tapered roller bearings on the prop shafts but mine has double row ball bearings. The outer bearing is a Nice (mfr) 1216-41 and the inner is a Nice 1210-30. I want to replace all 6 bearings with similar ones although I don't care who the manufacturer is. My problem is that the bearing is an obsolete number and after many calls to bearing houses and an internet search I can't find a modern replacement. Does anyone have a modern bearing part number? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Dale

Do you have dial or digital calipers, to measure ID and OD / Then, you can match something up.

I had to do this a couple of times, in the past, and, it worked out fine.

A few years ago, a fellow rebuilt a Jake, and posted many photos of the process here.
I will look up the old thread for you.  He may have addressed the bearing replacement issue too.

You can do your own search on the forum and find a number of other Jacobs projects and questions.

this guy has one of the bearings you need.

here is the other one:

make sure you set the preload correctly or they won't last long.

Thanks to everyone who offered advise. I ended up getting the 1210-30's from Richard's and the 1216-41's from LocateballBearings.com. The ones that are on ebay that are self aligning are not the correct ones. The have the same part number but are totally different. The guy at Richards commented that these are definitely old bearings and the only way to find them would be to find someone with NOS ones available. Anyway, problem  solved. Many thanks!
