I need some help selecting a good motor for a wind turbine
« on: August 15, 2015, 05:13:14 AM »
Hi all,

I want to build a windturbine but I'm not sure what motor I have to use. I recently got an old scootmobile (senior scooter) with a transaxle motor.

will this motor be good enough to build my first wind turbine? Do I need to disassemble the geared axle and use the motor without gears. How can I calculate the blade length so I have proper RPM.

I want to use the wind generator to charge a few 12v deep cycle lead accid or gel batteries.

thank you in advance!

hello Casper.  what is the gear ratio?

Hi,

thank you for your response. I don't know what the gear ratio is.

I found the axle on the producers website: http://www.amt-schmid.com/en/products/transaxle_drive_systems/dg_20_21/dg_20_21.php

however there is no info about the gear ratio. All it says is "Output speed from 111 to 276 rpm"

if it was mine , i would rotate the axle at a known rpm  while measuring the electrical output of the motor/generator.
discover the rpm range required to generate a usable voltage.
the smaller diameter the wind mill blades the faster they rotate.

it would be possible to attach two sets of fast blades to your axial housing.

Hi again,

I did send a mail to the company to request a detailed datasheet of the axle. I hope they will reply... If not I'll disassemble the scooter and do your suggested test.

3000:243 on the motor so 12:1 or more.
Nice motor /axle, but not for this application, small prop would never start it except in a huge wind... axle gearbox would not survive 24/7 operation if you could start it.

Find something else, and use it on another project would be my summation.

Like oztules said, try finding something that will produce reasonable amount of power. I doubt if that motor will meet your expectations. Don't you think it's more trouble than it's worth?

The motor is rated 24v at 3000 rpm. You would have to drive it through the gear box backward to get usable voltage. As mentioned, that's just over 12 rpm in. That's too slow for a mill without another pulley set on the blade side to allow the blade to spin faster.

Nice German made motor, but made for another purpose. The motor is designed to spin fast to cool it. Spin it slower and you will have to carefully watch the temperature rise and limit the output.

Nice motor for a battle bot... wind generator not so much... Now I know what I need to look for on a project idea I have rattling around my head....Sorry can't share! Something that could make me cash!
