Photos yearly inspection
« on: December 24, 2016, 02:26:59 PM »
Hello,

Below are some photos taken earlier this fall of my windmill.   It was lowered for yearly maintenance and inspection.  This set of blades are holding up very well, there is no leading edge wear after a year.  They are coated with Por 15 Hard nose paint.

I must say if you are going to have a mill, that is the way it should be done. I first saw that on a program and they tilted it up with a Bobcat.  Does the lift pole stay with it or is it removed?

Looking good, BD!

Your blades look brand new.  They appear to be holding up really well.  Looks great Boondr.

OH,

The gin pole stays attached.  At the end it is anchored down to a footing and held in place with a turnbuckle.

POR-15 products rock.

I'm looking to repeat just that quality someday soon, so, am very curious what sealer/primer/topcoat schedule you followed?

The plexiglass weather shroud looks smartly done too!

Looks like a guy goes from the short pole to the top to keep the long pole from waving as it lowers.

Dan,

I used the standard black Por-15 thinned out to seal the wood blade.  Next, applied the Por-15 High Build primer, sanded, and add another coat of primer.  Then three coats of the two part white Hard Nose top coat.

Foam brushes work very well and leave a smooth finish.

The shroud is made from a strip of thick vinyl, the type that is used to create curtains in front of doorways.  I like the softness of the vinyl over plexiglass for sound dampening.

Matt,

Yes, that is a safety rope tie to the end of the gin pole. Adds some insurance the gin pole will remain in alignment while lowering/raising the tower.  I have never observed the rope become taught moving the tower.  It is worth the peace of mind
