Please note that some of us connect to the Net more than one way.  When I am at home I use my 1Mbps SDSL, but out of the office I use wireless which is more like 200kbps and for which I potentially pay for every byte downloaded.

At home I have 4Mbps cable and at work 6.2Mbps ADSL.

I also run several dedicated servers with symmetrical 10Mbps and 100Mbps lines.

Damon, how much does your 1Mbps SDSL cost?

Lots!  Probably in 1 month what you pay for your home connection in a year!

(I run servers from home, so need the uplink speed and a low contention ratio.)

I used to find my cable line with 0.4Mbps did me great for 2 years of running my websites. Very rarely down, 99.8% uptime in two years I had.

I take it yours are more mission critical than mine? I could just about live without mine if I needed to.

Hi,

Apart from anything else my cable provider will not allow hosting of Web sites on their normal Internet service.  I went all the way up to the CEO to try to get sense from them over many years, but failed.

My cable providor (Virgin Media, previously NTL) doesn't care as long as you're not spamming and accept that you have to secure any FTP servers you use and that it is in no way supported by them.

Running a mail server was impossible though due to non-configurable reverse DNS and no static IP.

I am still running a mail server as residue from having been an ISP...  Static addresses and inbound services and a formal AUP that allow them are/were important!  B^>

I live 30 km from town, but cant get ADSL or ISDN. I use a Next-G wireless connection, 256k both ways, cost $49 per month. Speeds not the problem, 256k is fast enough for internet surfing, its the data usage thats gets ya. 1Gig per month is free , after which I have to pay 30cents per meg. Now my windows update wants me to download a 525Meg service pack for Office 2007, thats more than half my monthly limit, so no I'll give that update a miss thanks.

Yeesh... 525MB isn't a service pack -- that's a reinstall!!!  Does MS still offer the free + SH+H update CDs with their products?  If not, let me know and I'll download the thing and mail the disk to you.

I feel bad for the people with data limits.  i would have a million dollar bill.  My house uses about 2-5 gigabytes a day on our 1.5mbs (192kb / sec).  Some times we may down load 10+ gig in a day.

Hi: I am on cable modem. They keep upgrading the speeds so I think I am in the 1 to 2 mbps range, but I suspect my downlink speed is greater than my uplink speed. Response is decent. Cost is $50 a month.

Wireless service but I have its cheapest and slowest 256 download and 128 upload but no limits on how much it is used. Cost is $29 US a month next step up is double speeds at $45 and 4 ranges/rates available. Works good for most everything but is a little slow on big files. After having dial up it is just fine. Too far out for DSL and barely in range of the wireless tower which works line of sight. Lucked out have friends closer to tower that can't get it due to lay of the land.

Our Internet isn't particularly fast, but it is a completely owner built solar powered WiFi. The signal is relayed up and over a mountain from town 15 miles away in two hops.  384 down 384 up wireless $40.00 per month normal fee I get it free as a perk to my job as a wireless Internet installer.

"Hillbilly Wireless" here, 3 hops to town. TomW >> silo >> silo >> 200 foot radio tower>>ISP. Used to be a perk from the ISP I helped build. But I pay him his "dialup" fee in 6 month chunks because I can afford it. Was free for years because I worked with them a lot off and on with no pay.

Its not real fast but its lots faster than my only other option [dialup]. I get a static IP too which normally is a "premium".

Because you asked.

Just some older cheap 2.4 ghz stuff with omnis to clients and grids for point to point. Forget the brands but came from Canada. I use a grid on my end which helps cut thru the fog rain etc. Biggest issue is line of sight in this hilly terrain need to zig zag to get around 2 major hills. He connects a couple small towns to his noc with runs over 15 miles point to point. Mostly a matter of finding existing structures to put gear on. Water towers, etc.

20W of solar won't power a (roughly) 1A @ 12v router/access point. You need more solar to power it. Remember how much DamonHD struggles to power his laptop which uses 20-25W.

You'll need to multiply up the unit's consumption by 24/x where x is the number of sun-hours that you get each day, plus a fudge factor for losses in batteries, etc, eg maybe an extra 20%.

We have a wireless ISP in our area.  I typically see about 650kbps downlink and 550kbps uplink.  This is nothing like DSL but still adequate for most operations.  As opposed to a satellite, this works fine with VPN and latency sensitive applications.

by AbyssUnderground on Tue Jan 08, 2008 at 09:47:47 AM MST

I have 4Mbps cable with 400Kbps upstream for $50 (£25).

My ISP offers higher tiers (20Mbps with 768Kbps upstream) but its $70 (£35).

All tiers have traffic throttling to 25% of the speed between 4pm and 9pm if you download more than a certain amount (depending on tier) between that time.

  1. Mbps is throttled back to 1Mbps and 128Kbps upload if you download 350mb or upload 150mb
  2. Mbps is throttled back to 1Mbps and 128Kbps upload if you download 800mb or upload 350mb
  3. Mbps is throttled back to 5Mbps and 256Kbps upload if you download 3gb or upload 1.05gb
My ISP are also trialing 50Mbps on the new DOCSIS3 platform in some areas of the UK.

The throttling sucks but its rare it happens if all you do is browse. Save downloading for night and early day time.

Wireless 5M Down, 1M up.  I'm really close to the company's tallest tower, with perfect line of sight and happenstance good polarization.  Perfectly horizontal shot, since my roofline just happens to be the same hight above sea level as their tower (I'm on a hill -- most of my neighbors down the hill get really poor signal).  It also helped a bit that my dish is as big as it can get without having to be licensed (working on the license now, so that my planned amplifier will be legal).

I run WWW, FTP, mail, netmeeting/h323, and VOIP phone services, plus repeat some of my extra bandwith through a small POP for the neighbors who otherwise have nothing.

$100/month for the connection, static IP, bandwidth, no limits, phone, and 24/7 contact with a real engineer if I ever (rarely) need it.

I find my Linux machines test much higher than the win machines too for some reason?

Gigabit to my main machines, but I rarely see it go over about 600 megabits/sec. I think the backplane in my switch is the limiting factor because I can't seem to get more than 800 meg between machines either.

Home connection nowdays is much more modest, primary connection is only 512K/512K (symmetrical ADSL, which sounds like a contradiction in terms!), secondary is a 8M/384K with backup of 3G wireless. Seen bursts to 4M over it, but it's usually under 400K. The variability is (I think) due to insane contention ratios. Latency sucks big time and it's barely usable for the interactive work I do.
