Dont know about Edison batterys but there are some cells that last for 25yrs or more. These are expensive but can be found in certain places, its all a matter of keeping your eye out for them and may take some time for them to turn up. I have got 5 cells which im sure are the type with a so called 25yr life span as they have charged up after sitting flat for at least 2 yrs. I lost a cell due to a snapped post but i kept the remaining 5 cells and although had lots of sulphation on the plates at first after a long slow charge they seem to have shed most of this and hold a good charge. There so old they stopped making these cells some years ago, so keep your eye out and let people know what your up to...its amazing what people have stored away that just never got to throw away........sean

Thanks Sean, great website, keep up the good work. I am going to run a add in the paper and see how many free batteries I cna come up with, I want to build a monster bank that could run me at least a week without charging them.

Just want to say that Edison batteries are not that efficient. Perhaps that doesn't matter to you but you should be aware that less than 50% of the power going into them is going to come back out when you need it.

Yes, that's right. They have a very low internal resistance if I remember and don't hold a charge long. Edison batteries are NiFe. Very expensive too.

Expensive? That depends....

First off, NiFe batteries can be run down 100% on a daily basis with no damage at all. (Do that to lead acid batteries two or three times and you're obliged to buy a new set!)

Since even deep cycle lead acid batteries are recommended for only 50% discharge if you want long battery life (10 years or more), you literally have to buy twice the amp hours in lead acid to get the same storage as NiFe offers. One drawback of NiFe is that there's a 3 to 5 percent self discharge overnight. This doesn't bother me if I'm planning to run them down 90% or so before retiring for the evening.

Longterm, NiFe cells would be ideal for a remote location like a cabin that you only go to in the summer. If it's been six months, lead acid cells would be hurting and NiFes would just be sitting there waiting for you to charge them up.
