Can you make an altenator from an old AC clock motor ?

I was wondering if you spun one of these at slightly faster than their rated speed if they work the same as big induction motors or does the shaded pole interfere and would you need a capacitor? and what size if you do? Norm.

I'll go with the assumption you can find one of the old clock motors, it is still in good shape and it is PM.  Gee, this thing might be as large as 5 watts in power! And also on the deep- and favorable end it one is trying to make this work, we will say the motor is a 1200 RPM motor.  This means the gearing to make a one second sweep hand do 1 RPM is 1200/1.

BUT IT IS FREE! And, we've stripped it from it's little case, we have made a small propeller because the ones at the hobby store are either the wrong direction or wrong pitch, we made a case, wired it up, made a mast(tower), bought rectifiers and now (when the wind blows) we can produce ~15-20 Miliamps!

If one cared to go to http://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?UID=2003101907530949&item=10-1430&catname=electric

They might find a -12 VDC 475 RPM MOTOR- for $6 that would probably produce a lot more power for a lot less hassle.

Your milage may vary - but as long as you're having fun, go for it.

Well originally I was thinking of small wattage but with 110 vac by spinning it with a 12 vdc motor just powerful enough to power a Brother Word Processor so that I could compose stuff for E-Mail and discussion boards in the car...sort of a poor mans lap-top (yes it would be quite a lap full! but the thing only cost $2.50 ...but like the neighbor got this 14.5 HP 'K Pro' (KMart blue light special?), 43inch cut riding lawnmower ...I found a buyer for it $100 bucks got a $25 commission...bought a Vector 225 watt inverter at Big Lots for $19.95 ...found out that Walmarts had a Vector 175 watt for $34, a Vector 350 watt for $49) and you're wondering if I'm having fun? You bet your sweet ... , I am! and it just keeps getting better and better! Hope all of you guys are having the same! (:>) Norm.  (there's quite a story behind the ridin lawnmower too if anyone wants to hear it)

The shaded pole makes the equivalent of a start winding, because it is out-of-phase with the main winding. It won't have much effect at running speed. I think the 5 watt rating someone suggested is too generous. I would expect 1-2 watts unless you rewind it. You would also be talking hi speed, this would be a 4-pole motor at best (likely 2-pole!). This is also not a very efficient motor.
