Car DC Fan Motors

I just went to a freinds junk yard and was roaming around.. Love that stuff.. anyway I was looking at DC fan motors and did a quick check, they have hugh cylinder magnets (2) of them. 2-wires out..I hooked it to a ohm meter and it registered 1.2 ohms.. I measured the voltage and turned the fan by hand and got 1 volt + no problem... Has anyone worked we these and if so, how was the result.. did it produce any charging amps? what was the voltage?

Thanks
Fred.

Fred, I tried this a few years back, they well produce power, but not enough to charge a 12v battery. If you can find any 24v ones, that mite work. From Mike

I imagine they're about the same as car heater/ac blower motors yes they do have 2 huge ceramic magnets and Mike is right they don't produce enough to charge a battery but upon looking at the armature I'm thinking there is only about 10 turns of fairly heavy wire and there is enough room there for about 20 turns maybe about25-30 turns if you were to drop down to a couple of guages smaller wire so you would get charging voltage and maybe double the amps at a lower speed? What do you think? They seem to have potential enough to warrant a little bit of experimenting at least. Norm.
(....besides I have some wire from a scrap micro-wave that I'm eager to try out on a project like this!) (:>)

Thank you Mike and Norm. I wonder if they could be hooked in series even, say about 5-9 of them all seperate gennys but hooked in series. This might work to create a charging voltage without even modifiying them, the one I have is a sealed unit that can not be opened easy. I also wonder about the apm's.. I figure a couple at least.
Thanks Guys!

Yeah thinking the same thing for sealed motors seperate ginnys in series maybe stacked?  Blower motors come apart quite easily tho' four metal tabs bent over. All kinda ways to skin a cat! Norm

I used this kind of motors, only 24v units can charge batteries perhaps at 300 rpm or more, i rewired a 12v one with 25 turns each coil and it works, but only 2 Amp to the batteries at 1000 rpm. Another problem is that they are brushes, and it´s no easy open and close it, if motors are used then brushes have a short live; i did a genny whith a 24v one, it worked good direct drive, but in 2 month end the brushes, end the genny.

Like Ifred was thinking a few of them seperate ginnys but hook all of them in series that way lower rpm lower voltage lower amps....but enough of them in series would result in enough to charge batteries and yet result in longer brush life? Norm

Would it be a decent idea to remove and reuse the magnets for building a bigger gen?
