Hornet looking blades verses others we found.

Maybe its the blades?  Ours looked like the ones the Hornet uses.  We got a gray 4 blade set off ebay and now we are charging! Cindy

We found that different blades help.  A while back we bought a 6 blade set off ebay, they look like the same blades the Hornet uses (black pointed lawn darts my neighbor calls them). We ran those blades for about a month and never got our batteries charged up even in strong winds. We recently bought a gray 4 blade set off a guy on ebay for 70 dollars and found them to be worth every penny.  We had a couple of questions and the guy was there to help.  We took the pointed 6 blades down and put up his 4 blade set and now our batteries are charging!  Those gray blades are a lot lighter and go so much faster than any of the other blades we have tried.  They run fast in hardly any wind at all.  Maybe they just need different blades?

They may have been, all we know is they work better than anything we tried yet.  I saw he has a 5 blade now.  I wonder if it would be better yet than the 4 blade one??
Who knows.

Keep in mind that, all things being equal, more blades on a rotor mean better torque but LOWER RPM's.  Many people find that a 2 or 3 blade setup makes more juice than a four or five or six, assuming they are all the same diameter and airfoil.  But, as mentioned, it also depends on your mill and what the mill wants for RPM and torque.

Good luck and have fun!

What you said makes sense but I dont think the lawn dart blades ever turned as fast even when the wind was blowing hard.  The difference is like day and night on speed and they dont make noise like the lawn darts did either.  Today we didn't have much wind but our new blades were doing their job.  We thought we understood that more blades means you can start sooner.  I know the lawn darts wouldn't even be moving this wind.  For us more was way less.

It is probably true in general that more blades mean a lower speed but the Hornet sets are 6 blades and I think they turn faster than the Windseeker 2 and 3 blade mills. (6' diameter).

Hi cindy,
Is this a 'homebrew' mill? A lot depends on your configuration.

Yes it is.  Our neighbor helped us get it going.  He has all the tools and things.  It was an Amteck 40 motor we used.
We are learning as we go but it has been fun.
