ideas for GM-90 power plant

Hello fellows,

I've been nosing around this site since someone on "Your Tractor Magazine" site turned me own to it.

anyway, is anyone here actually using a lister clone to generate power?  i have purchased an engine and generator (have picked up neither at this time).  i'm in the design stage (dream stage) and wondering what i should look out or allow for.  any help would be appreciated.  so far i'm thinking of driving the unit with 7 groove multigroove belt (like george at utterpower.com), making a heavy generator pulley to have some flywheel effect to even out surges.  still not sure on how to best connect for backup power to house.    Thanks for any help.

I've been thinking of getting one of those and trying to get it to run an used motor oil...maybe a mix of motor oil and diesel.

I've always though an old Hay square bailer flywheel would work great. There pretty heavy though.  Not sure how much flywheel your looking for as these are probably 300 lbs.  Sure would even out any surges though.

I purchased a GM90/8 a bit ago then ordered a 5kw ST Head for it.  I'm using the pulley that came with the unit and a 5VX belt to drive the head.  I haven't had time to make up the mounting frame as yet but have all the materials to get it together.  I'm hoping some time will free up in the next couple weeks so I can finish it up.   I'll post some pics when its together and functional.

Have Fun

I have a Listeroid 6/1 which I use for power.  I made an 8" multigroove pulley for a serpentine belt which is driven by one of the flywheels.  The engine is driving a Chinese ST-3 four pole generator.

For most folks 3Kw doesn't seem like a lot of power but AE people may see that differently.  There are several remarkable things about this set up.

  1.  Great motor starting capability.  While supplying 1.5 Kw it will easily start my 115 volt submersible well pump.  This is a pump which an 1375 HUP Solar One battery and a Trace SW 2512 can not start.  I was running this unit a couple of days ago and my daughter decided to vacuum with the central vac.  No problem.  I was happily surprised
  2.  Compared to several other gen sets I have or have had it is amazingly quiet.  Not silent but quiet.  One can stand by the operating gen set and talk to another person.  And this is with the gen set in a closed garage.
  3.  These things shake.  While quiet, I can feel the vibrations in my feet when I stand by the unit.
  4.  Voltage regulation is adequate -- not great.  If I set no load at 63 Hz and 130 volts.  At full load we will be about 55 Hz and 112 volts.  This is largely due to marginal governer control on the Listeroid.  If a fellow didn't have meters to measure these things he wouldn't know because everything works.  Perhaps ignorance is bliss.  I like to know.
  5.  While it is easy enough for a big fellow like me to crank start it, I wouldn't suggest it for wife.  I put a ring gear off a 79 chevy 348 on the shaft of the generator and set-up the starter.  Works fine but was harder to do than I thought it would be.
  6.  For what it is worth, I would do it again.  In fact, I am considering doing another unit to burn natural gas.
BTW -- I am sending a MO to Ed at windstuffnow to buy a set of magnets and some silicon steel.  I hope to make a battery charger which will be directly driven.

All the best,

Rich

You might consider using biogas (or even making
'generator gas' of wood)?

If you happen to have some cow manure, chicken manure or ... available you can get burning fuel for your engine very cheaply.

I think that the real problem is how to store
the big amount of gas
necessary for engine use
as generated in long periods,
in such a containers,
which are reasonable small and low-cost.

Just heard from an Australian guy that he
is using a small barrowheel tire
to store the gas for
his lawnmover. He is using a compressor
from a fridge to get the gas in the tire.

So there is a cheap way to store the gas.

I would like to run one indoors (no freezing temperatures) and burn filtered fryer oil from McDonalds (etc).

Low/no cost fuel
Low environmental impact
Cogeneration possible to provide DHW, space heating and charge my batteries

Industry has done cogeneration for decades, now I want my "free" ride.

Best regards,

troy

You might want to go to UTTERPOWER.COM these people have a lot of info. on the lister clones . Caroll
