How does one secure magnets to PMA armatures?

How do I secure magnets to PMA armature?

I have two older Windseeker wind power generators. My newer windmills have noticeable drag because of the more powerful magnets. I'd like to put better magnets in these older windmills. How does one secure them? I heard that aircraft epoxy can work but the metal band looks best.    Jack

Hi Jack -
Id think good glue - and the metal strap.

But I wonder, is there anything wrong with the old windseekers now?  If they work as they should now, I think that better magnets would not be an upgrade.  If you replace the magnets with stronger ones, they cutin speed will be lower - they'll generate higher voltage at any given rpm.  This would force the blade to run too slowly for it's size and they'd probably not be efficient.  You could replace the blades - with larger/slower ones, and probably get more power in lower winds, but in higher winds they'd be generating lots more than the stator was wound for and I wonder if they might overheat.

I think if you changed the magnets, then you should also rewind them and change the blades, otherwise there might be no advantage.

Very interesting DanB.

Both the Windseeker 502 and 503 work ok. The 502 is a two blade but now has 3 hornet blades on the small hub. The 503 has been the most reliable mill and has the original 3 blade. When one turns Hornet PMA's (I have the 6 volt and the 12 volt versions) there is significant drag from magnetic attraction and working around the shaft one doesn't have to worry about losing any hardware as the neo magnets are very strong. The Windseekers are PMA's also but one has to look inside to tell if there are any magnets there. I use these mills in 20-50 mph winds as solar is more reliable but when the wind does blow and this can happen nicely for 24 hours at a time the 5 windmills I have really produce! Cutin speed is not important for me. But higher voltages I think are. The 6 volt Hornet supposedly does 60 amps at 12 volts at 35 mph just when the noise starts (maybe 50 volts). This is probably near 1500-2000 rpm. In the winds I use all the blades on everything are turning. Incidently, the Hornet 6V exceeds the output of the Windseeker 503 at about 25 mph. No problems yet with too much heat burning wires. Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I don't understand these mills and the electrical theory as well as I'd like so am looking forward to further discussion.

OK, glue plus strap!

Jack

Southwest Windpower told me yesterday that as of NOW they will no longer supply support for Windseeker windmills.
