Okay, so here goes the attempt at posting a picture (diagram really) to explain the concept for this large alternator...
I am going to try to post the diagram of the magnet spacing and 3 phase coil layout for the 40 pole, 2ft+ diameter rotor alternator here:

Looks like it should work fine. You got it. One thought though... If you match the coils to the magnets ( like in a single phase ) you'll end up with less turns per coil. You'd end up with 120 coils in the 3 phase but reduce your overall resistance in the wires. Also, reduce the air gap thus getting more flux through the wires. Just something to think about, and I don't mean to boggle your thoughts, your design will work fine. Have Fun!!! Ed

got a little lost here but somewhere along the line someone commented on the plywood might be too flimsy, maybe you could glue reinforcing strips at right angles to the plywood disk? Sounds pretty neat...too ambitious for me tho' have fun! Norm

Hi Ed. Thanks for your comments. You're no doubt right, 120 coils would be a good way to go, but there is one other detail about this design that I am hoping I can take advantage of IF I need to. The magnets have just enough space between them for TWO MORE magnets between each magnet in this design. The idea there is that if this experimental design doesn't produce the power I need, I can take the pole count from 40 to 120! With the existing 60 coils, that would mean 1 north pole and 1 south pole over each leg of each coil. It would be a bit of a high up front cost, buying another 80 of those magnets from Wondermagnet, but if I need to, it's reassuring to know that I can!
Regards, XEROID.
