Rewound microwave transformer

This may be of interest to some.

I have just finished testing a rewound microwave transformer with a view to reclaiming my welder that has duty as an occasional battery charger. With 240V primary, I wound the secondary with 4 strands of about 0.8 mm wire, new but old stuff in case I let the smoke out. I found a secondary voltage of 0.94V/turn no load. I placed tappings at 27,31,33,35&39 turns the following currents into 25.2v 8A, 13A,15A,17A & 20A. I ran the TX on the 17V tapping for 2.5 hours with acceptable temperature rise, with fan cooling. While I have yet to check the current rate when batteries are full, I will most probally use the 15A tapping when wre-winding with heavy wire for real. I figure with five of these I can dedicate my welder to its intended task, and get it out from under the kitchen table. regards Allan
